We are thrilled that Sir Terry Waite, a patron of One to One Children's Fund for more than 20 years, has received a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours.
Sir Terry has always been a stalwart supporter of One to One, including visting in person our major projects in Kosovo, the Middle East and South Africa.
During the 1980s, while working as an envoy for the Church of England, Sir Terry successfully negotiated the release of hostages in Iran and Libya, before being taken hostage himself during negotiations in Lebanon. Following his release after six years, he decided to devote himself to study, writing, lecturing and humanitarian activities and went on to publish a number of best selling books.
Now at the age of 84, Sir Terry has been appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG), a distinction that acknowledges his outstanding service to charities such as One to One.
In his foreword to One to One’s book More Hills Too Climb, Sir Terry wrote: “It has been a privilege for me to be associated in a small way with the founders and Trustees of One to One Children's Fund. They are beacons of light in a world where darkness is all too common.”
